Gates Motel: Gameplay FAQ

What is the object of this game?
To find and eliminate targets and avoid being eliminated yourself.

How do I do that?
First, you must have permission to eliminate a target. Your character follows a strange sort of ethics in this regard. If you have written permission, in the form of an anonymous or signed note, your character can eliminate another player. You will also need a loaded weapon. Some sort of defense against attacks on yourself might be a good idea as well.

So I can't just strangle other players?
No. You need a target note and a weapon with corresponding ammo.

Who makes the target notes?
Any player who finds a target note can rewrite it unless they themselves are the target listed on the note. However, target notes that are rewritten will automatically be dropped into another random room in order to avoid selecting your own targets. If you die, all target notes you are holding will be rewritten to make your eliminator the target. This system attempts to keep any one player from dominating the scoreboard.

I shot someone and missed! Then they shot back and I died!
If a player is wearing a defense for the weapon you used, they will be protected from your attack and may automatically return fire with any weapons they may be carrying. Self-defense is the one exception to the target rule.

I shot at someone and it told me they weren't there!
Gates Motel is a turn-based game, but it is played in real-time. Sometimes players will exit a room between your turns, so you might miss an opportunity to eliminate them.

I killed someone and a bunch of target notes appeared with my name on them!
If a player is carrying any target notes when they are murdered, they will automatically rewrite the notes to target the murderer. (note: target notes are now dropped into random locations in this situation).

Last time I logged in I had ammo, now it's gone!
You probably automatically fended off an attack. Read more about this in the Defenses Help.

I'm lost. Is there a map?
Yes, there are simple graphical versions for each of the Gates Motel maps, but these do not cover all of the areas of the game in detail. We encourage you to create your own maps, using a pencil & paper first is a good idea. Finding your way around is part of the game.

I Like Gates Motel. Can I put a link/banner on my website?
Yes. Please feel free to tell your friends about Gates Motel and/or link to the game from your website(s). Banner graphics can be found at: http://www.gameslate.com/gfx/banners/.

How do I change my settings, like how long the event list is, my kill taunt and my default graffiti text?
Right now these settings are not changeable, the new options for this will be in place soon.

Who is this Target guy? I see him all the time.
Target is the testing character, he was created for bug-testing purposes. If you see Target and have a target note for him, feel free to kill him. He is usually an easy kill, rarely carrying weapons or defenses.

Is it possible to cheat with this game?
Not likely. Gates Motel is a server-side game and the Gameslate server will not accept erroneous requests. Trying to trick the server will probably just result in lost turns and strange errors.

I want more turns.
Most of the public arenas have 99 Turns per day, which should allow approx. 10 minutes of playing per day in one of those arenas. Your turns will refresh once per day and your refresh time is listed within the game. If you want to play more, we suggest joining more arenas or if you have paid access you can create your own arena with up to 250 turns per day.

How about refreshing turns twice daily?
You do not have to use all of your turns at once. If you want to play twice (or more) daily, just reserve some of your turns for later.

I want more weapons.
No, you can't have them.   =P

What is my score?
You can see your score in each game arena from the arena's entry page.

How is score calculated?
Each kill is worth 3 points and each time you die a point is removed. So the formula is simply: score = (kills*3) - deaths. Average scores may be rounded.
